LinksTRAVEL HISTORY WHEN YOU'RE DONE SHOPPING |
Starting at the Liffey and ending at Parnell Square, O’Connell St is Dublin’s biggest shopping thoroughfare. Once considered the widest street in Europe, it used to be called Sackville St. The name was changed to honor “The Liberator”, O’Connell. The medians feature monuments to Irish leaders and historic figures. O’Connell’s statue faces the Liffey and O’Connell Bridge, surrounded by the Winged Victories, one of which has a bullet hole from 1916. At the other end of the street, Parnell’s statue points towards Mooney’s pub with Parnell’s famous words “Thus far and no farther” engraved at his feet. At the intersection of Cathedral St., a newer statue from 1988 of a woman in water is officially named the “Spirit of the Liffey.” Shop Irish
